Somboon Vivatanukul (born 1950)
Thailand-based artist and furniture maker
He is affectionately known by many people as "Boom," "Uncle Boom," and "Papa Boom."
In 2021, the company began operations as "Boon's Hobby".
Before his current career as a furniture craftsman, he launched the broom brand "baanboon.brooms" and served as its managing director. At the same time, he also started working as a woodworker, making photo stands and picture frames. He has now retired and handed over "baanboon.brooms" to his children.
After retiring, Boon decided to devote himself to self-studying furniture making, aiming to create things that were not bound by preconceived ideas. Acquaintances who learned about his activities gave him various scrap materials, such as shelves and rotting roofs from a closed tobacco factory. Having secured sufficient materials, Boon changed direction and took on a new challenge of making furniture from old materials, and at the age of 71, he began his full-fledged business, "Boon's Hobby."
His unique work is that he transforms even 100-year-old lumber into a unique, one-of-a-kind piece. Boone's motto is "I want to give a second life to waste wood that would otherwise be thrown away as trash" and "Use as much of the material as possible." He tries to come up with designs that bring out the inherent beauty of wood, without cutting or shaving it down. His unique and original pieces convey his feelings about waste wood.
