RIKI WATANABE
(1911-2013) Graduated from the Department of Wood Crafts at Tokyo Higher Technical School. After working as an assistant professor at his alma mater and an assistant at the Forestry Department at Tokyo Imperial University (now the University of Tokyo), he founded Japan's first design office in 1949. He was deeply involved in the founding of the Interior Architecture Department at Tokyo Zokei University, Craft Center Japan, the Japan Industrial Designers Association, and the Japan Design Committee. His work on clocks became his life's work, producing interior designs for hotels such as Keio Plaza Hotel and Prince Hotel, furniture such as string chairs and Trii stools, and public clocks and watches, starting with wall clocks and including the Hibiya Daiichi Life pole clock. He has received numerous awards, including the Gold Prize at the Milan Triennale, the Mainichi Design Award, and the Medal with Purple Ribbon. In 2006, he held the exhibition "Riki Watanabe: Innovation in Living Design" at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.
